Not only is “equality pedestrian crossing” a ludicrous idea, in Australia it’s front page news.
Several newspaper outlets owned by Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp have today (7th March 2017) published articles pushing for gender equality with the walk/don’t walk symbol, claiming that the universal symbol of a genderless — yes who’s saying the symbol isn’t already a man? — is portraying the wrong message and that it should be 50% female and 50% male figures on the lights and signs.
This is political correctness gone mad. If we want equality then we better have symbols of EVERYONE who uses a crossing. Men, women, dogs, cats, kangaroos, fat people, skinny people, drag queens, metal heads, pop princesses, white people, black people… The list goes on.
Not only is this unnecessary, it’s expensive. How much is going to cost in labour and parts to install these things. Are the females pushing for this going to volunteer their time? It’s going to cost nearly $9000 Australian dollars to install just six of these lights. The justification is that 50% of Victoria is female and the pedestrian crossing lights don’t indicate this.
A total of ten female pedestrian figures will be installed on traffic lights at the intersection of Swanston and Flinders streets as part of a VicRoads-approved 12-month trial.
